Entering its fourth generation, the BMW X5 receives a new architecture, new engines and an optional off-road package. Design changes are more subtle but altogether they contribute to a more refined look compared to its predecessor, The question is”did BMW go through enough given this is a full design and not a mid-cycle refresh? New Design Language
A wheelbase that is 42mm longer, 66mm wider and 19mm taller, gives the x5 an imposing appearance and generous levels of space for passengers and their luggage. The latest x5 retains the Hallmark proportions of an SAV(Sports Activity Vehicle)but the paired back design language, clean surfacing and precise tires accentuating the car’s robustness, elegant poise and muscular authority.
The most striking feature of the front end is the large BMW kidney grille with single piece surround, standard LED are available across all model range while LASERLIGHT and adaptive LED headlights are optional.

Interior and Equipment
The new interior makes the outgoing version look like a grandpa with its new 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen that boasts an up to minute graphic presentation along with a similarly sized digital instrument cluster as standard, gesture controls are an optional feature along with the standard iDrive clickwheel. Sunroof is standard while panoramic is optional, the x5 seats 5 with the option of a 3rd row(optional) which can be folded flat to create room for more luggage, the tailgate opens and closes automatically for convenience.
Advanced Engines and Transmissions
The BMW X5 is now available with an advanced turbocharged inline 6 cylinder engine, a V8, a diesel engine and a plug-in hybrid (2019). The xDrive40i is a 3.0 in line 6 340hp, the xDrive30d is a 3.0 straight 6 diesel turbocharger with 265hp and the xDrive50i is the 4.4 v8 462hp. The future M performance version will have a 3.0 diesel with 400hp. All engines are linked with a new 8speed Steptronic transmission with wider ratio spread and new control electronics help to increase the powertrain overall efficiency. New torso dampers reduce rotational irregularities and converter slip for a superior shift, comfort and optimized hydraulic control to enable a sportier gear shift. All-wheel drive is electronically controlled.
Safety and Comfort Packages
Available as an option, the Driving Assistant professional package comprises the steering and lane control assist including TRAFFIC JAM ASSIST with Active side collision protection together, the new lane changing assist can be used on motorways and dual carriageways when the steering and lane control Assistant is on.
For the first time, an Emergency Stop Assistant is now available and it is indeed to be used in situations where the driver is suddenly incapacitated because of a medical emergency. This feature is activated by pulling the electric parking brake switch.
The BMW X5 is a great step up in the SUV category giving the likes of the Mercedes Benz GLE, Land Rover Range Rover Sport a run for their money but can it surpass them in all ramifications? Only time will tell… The car will be available at COSCHARIS MOTORS sometime in 2019.
